1932 Olympic Team

The 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles California from 7/30-8/14/1932. Weightlifting
consisted of 5 weight classes 60kg, 67.5kg, 75kg, 82.5kg and +82.5kg. The competition for all
weight classes was held on 7/30&31/1932 at the Olympic Auditorium. Mark Berry was team
coach. Mark was the first to coach a United States weightlifting team.

The Athletes
Henry l. Duey
5/1/1908-2/13/1993

Henry was born in Chicago but spent the majority of his life in Detroit Michigan as a tool and die
maker for Ford and Republican Tool and Die. He was also a part time farmer. Henry’s
competition record is difficult to locate. I assume he probably lifted for the Michigan Alkali Club
as did Olympic Team member Stanley Kratkowski who was also from Detroit. However, Henry
did win the bronze medal in the 181lb class at the 1932 Olympics. Henry and Tony Terlazzo’s
bronze medals were the first medals won by Americans in the modern or three lift era.

Albert “AL” H. Manger
5/21/1899-3/1985

Al started lifting when he was 21 years old. At the time Al only weighed 97 pounds. He started
gaining weight and eventually lifted in the heavyweight class. Al was a Senior National
Champion in the 181lb and heavyweight classes. Al was also a regional champion in the shot
put and weight throwing. Al probably lifted in several State Championships as well as regional
and local weightlifting meets but the results are no longer available. However, Al was a 4X
Senior National Champion and a member of the 1932 Olympic team at the Los Angeles
Olympics where he placed 5th in the heavyweight class. Al represented the Baltimore YMCA
and was a member of the AAU Weightlifting Committee in 1926.

Arne “Arnie” Sundberg

Arne would drive from the Astoria Oregon area to the east coast to lift in the national
championships. Arne was one of a number of national level lifters coached by Dr. Wheeler in
Oregon in those days. Arne retired after the 1932 Olympics.

Samuel “Sam” Termine Jr.
9/1/1909-5/20/1978

Sam was born in New Orleans but moved to California when he was five years old. Sam
represented the Los Angeles Athletic Club during his lifting career. Shortly after the 1932
Olympics Sam had a near fatal automobile accident which forced him to retire from lifting. He
moved to Escondido California in 1952 and established a trenching business that he ran until his
death in 1978. Not much is known about Sam’s lifting career at this time. At the 1932 AAU
Senior Nationals Stanley Kratkowski and Joe Miller tied for 1st place with a 680 total. I am not
sure if Sam lifted at the 1932 seniors or if he was selected for the 1932 Olympic Team at a later
tryout. Possibly, Sam could have been an ACWLA Champion prior to 1932. The Los Angeles
Athletic Club had a large weightlifting team in the 1920’s and Sam probably won several State
and local championships.

George Howard Turbyfill
1903-1939*

George is typically referred to as Howard. Howard was born in Palestine Texas and made the
1932 Olympic Team while living in Corona California*. At that time Howard was 19 years old
and working as a blacksmith. Howard’s competitive career is difficult to locate and further
research is needed. Team tryouts were held in Philadelphia, Detroit and Los Angeles so
apparently the 1932 Senior Nationals were not used to select the Olympic Team. However,
Howard did finish 6th in the heavyweight class at the 1932 Olympics. I assume Howard stopped
lifting after 1932.

join the York Oil Burner Athletic Club about 1932. Walter was an all-around strongman and bent
pressed the 202lb Cyr dumbbell and the 209lb Rolandow dumbbell while weighing about
165lbs. Walter played football and was an expert tumbler and wrestler. Walter was the first
