Nick Maltezos New Jersey Strength and Power HoF inductee 2023

By Strength and Power Hall of Fame

A brief personal history:
Married for over 23 years, and we have two beautiful children. My parents came directly off the boat from Greece and made a new start in this land of opportunity. My father pushed me into sports like karate and running, and he was my first workout partner through the mid-2000s. I'm proud to say that my Dad and wife, were at my all-time most significant lifts during my prime years.
My son and daughter have also attended all of my meets for years, and along with my wife, have been my best supporters. Thank you! and Thank you to the Strength and Power Hall Of Fame for this excellent honor!

What led you to your sport:
The movie Pumping Iron started my weightlifting path. I was such a big fan of 1970s bodybuilders like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbo, and Lou Ferrigno (I always thought Lou was the best bodybuilder of his day). I started lifting in the 8th grade by curling my boom box radio and benching my bed before I could join a gym. When friends started to see my improvements, they would ask where I worked out. I would reply that I had a gym at my house when the furniture in my room was my gym! Then in high school, I began hoping to become a bodybuilder with the help of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding." My interest swayed from bodybuilding and geared more towards gaining strength as the early years went on. By 1990, I saw an advertisement for a bench press contest, and on May 15 of that year, I entered my first-ever meet called the Bayshore Bench Press Championships. As of 2023, I've competed in meets every year since 1990.

As a youth coach, players ask me how to improve their power, and I always refer them to Powerlifting. I would advise them not to worry about the weight, concentrate on proper form, technique, and everything else will fall into place. Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
