Al started lifting when he was 21 years old. At the time, Al only weighed 97 pounds. He started gaining weight and eventually lifted into the heavyweight class. Al was a Senior National Champion in the 181lb and heavyweight classes. Al was also a regional champion in the shot put and weight throwing. Al probably lifted in several State Championships and regional and local weightlifting meets, but the results are no longer available. However, Al was a 4X Senior National Champion and a member of the 1932 Olympic team at the Los Angeles Olympics, where he placed 5th in the heavyweight class.  Al represented the Baltimore YMCA and was a member of the AAU Weightlifting Committee in 1926.
