Walter was born in St. Charles, Missouri* and his family moved to Clinton, Indiana, when he was 2. Walter started lifting in 1928. Bob Hoffman asked Walter to move to York, Pa., and join the York Oil Burner Athletic Club in 1932. Walter was an all-around strongman and bent-pressed the 202lb Cyr dumbbell and the 209lb Rolandow dumbbell while weighing about 165 lbs. Walter played football and was an expert tumbler and wrestler. Walter was the first cover man for Strength and Health Magazine in December 1932.
