George was a strongman, boxer, gymnast, acrobat, editor, publisher, author and inventor. George was born in England and immigrated to Canada in 1911. In 1923, George moved to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to develop a national organization to govern weightlifting. Before this time, there were no standard lifts or rules governing competitions. George was the President and co-founder of the American Continental Weightlifting Association along with Ottley Coulter and David Willoughby. This was the first real attempt to formalize lifting. Also, while in Pittsburg, George operated the Apollo Barbell Gym.

 

In the 1920s, George manufactured a revolving plate loading barbell, a coil spring chest expander, and a cast aluminum rowing machine. He was editor of Strength Magazine from 1924-1927, Strength and Health Magazine from 1932-1934, and during the 1920s was President of the Jowett Institute, which sold strength courses by mail. He also served as the Breitbart Institute of Physical Culture Director in New York City. For a time, George also published The Bodybuilder Magazine. George helped Bob Hoffman launch Strength and Health Magazine and also assisted the Weider brothers with their publications. George was the first president of the IFBB.
