Peary started lifting when he was 12 years old. He started lifting to improve his strength and gain weight. He was unsuccessful until he followed the J.C. Hise heavy high rep squat and gallons of raw milk program. Peary eventually gained about 100. During his lifting career, Peary competed in several local and regional five lift* weightlifting meets. He also squatted 450lbs and deadlifted 500lbs. Peary squatted 302lbs for 22 reps at an exhibition in 1936.

However, Peary is best known as a publisher, author, inventor, and administrator. He and his wife Mabel published Iron Man Magazine from 1936 to 1986 when they sold the magazine. Iron Man covered bodybuilding, powerlifting, and weightlifting with many articles concerning nutrition and health. Peary also invented several pieces of equipment, including the “magic circle,” advertised in Iron Man. Peary and Mabel also published Lifting News from 1954 to 1969.

Peary has donated thousands of hours and dollars to weightlifting, powerlifting, and bodybuilding for over 50 years. Both Peary and Mabel were instrumental in making powerlifting a recognized strength sport. Peary served weightlifting and powerlifting as an administrator for decades. Peary is a member of the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame and the Powerlifting Hall of Fame.
