Alan Calvert
4/20/1875-6/24/1944
Alan started lifting in the 1890s, long before organized weightlifting contests were conducted. He was a businessman, a magazine publisher, and the author of several books. He founded the Milo Barbell Company (1902), one of the first barbell companies in the world, and published one of the first strength training magazines in the United States, Strength Magazine (1914). Alan also wrote and published The Truth About Weightlifting and Super Strength.
Alan founded Milo Barbell Company in 1902 and started manufacturing adjustable, plate-loading barbells and dumbbells. Milo Barbell was the first adjustable barbell manufacturer in the United States. Bob Hoffman, Mark Berry, Harry Paschall, and Dick Bachtell all started lifting with Milo Barbells.
Alan urged Americans to create an association for weightlifting that would regulate competitions, create a definitive set of lifts, create rules and standards for equipment, and keep official records. His suggestion resulted in the formation of the ACWLA* the first governing body for weightlifting in the United States
