Robert “Bob” Hise II

5/23/1915-6/10/1996

Bob was born in Tennessee and moved to California in 1951. While in Tennessee, Bob was state and southeastern weightlifting champion several times in the 165 and 181lb classes. Bob was 5th at the 1944 Jr. Nationals in the 165lb class. Bob lifted for the Lookout Mountain Weightlifting Club and the Frye Institute. Also, in Tennessee, Bob served as a southeastern AAU committee member and promoted lifting on the local, state, and regional levels. Bob would also stage the Bob Hise Show, a weightlifting event organized by the local YMCA. Both weightlifting and powerlifting competitions were held during the event. Like many lifters of Bob’s time, he served in the military during WW2.

When Bob moved to California, he established a gym in his backyard.  Later, Bob established a weightlifting program at the Downtown Los Angeles YMCA, where he coached lifters, offered classes, and founded an AAU weightlifting club. The LA YMCA would become one of the top weightlifting teams in the country. In 1973, Bob founded International Olympic Lifter magazine and established the Mavrik Barbell Company. Both the magazine and the barbell company stopped operation in 1996. In 1985, Bob formed the American Weightlifting Association, which held competitions for several years.

For most of his life, Bob promoted weightlifting on the local, state, regional, and national levels. Bob was team manager of the 1967 US Pan American Team and served as meet director for six senior nationals. Bob was chairman of the South Pacific Weightlifting Committee and the National AAU Weightlifting Committee and was a Category 1 weightlifting official.
