Talmadge Russell “Russ” Fletcher

 

Russ started lifting in the early 1960’s. Russ represented the Tri-City Weightlifting Club which was the best powerlifting club in Virginia in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Powerlifting was just getting started in Virginia and Russ was the best powerlifter in the State and in the top two or three superheavyweight powerlifters in the United States.

1st Superheavyweight 1969 Virginia AAU Powerlifting Championships. Best Lifter

3rd Superheavyweight 1969 Senior Nationals Powerlifting

2nd Superheavyweight 1970 Senior Nationals Powerlifting. (Tied for 1st)

 

Held the superheavyweight national squat record 810.5lbs in 1970

Officially Deadlifted 804lbs 1970

Totaled 2040lbs and 2070lbs for superheavyweight national records in 1970

In 1970 held the Virginia State superheavyweight powerlifting records. 450lb bench, 750lb squat, 770lb deadlift and 1970 total. The records were set on 4/18/1970.

 450lb bench was still the Virginia State record in 1980

 770lb deadlift was still the Virginia State Record in 1987

Russ best lifts 810.5 Squat, 490 Bench, 804 deadlift & 2070 total.

 

 

*The Virginia Beach Power Meet was the first power meet held in Virginia Beach. The meet was held on 3/2/1968 in Virginia Beach at the Cavalier Hotel. The met director was Robert Crampton and the MC and Chief of Officials was Bob Crist Virginia AAU Chairman. The meet was sanctioned by the Virginia AAU.
