Dr. Wheeler joined the Multnomah Athletic Club in 1912. He would be a member for 85 years. He was a competitive swimmer, boxer, canoeist, and weightlifter. Dr. Wheeler was a lifter, coach, meet director, and promotor of weightlifting in Oregon virtually his entire life. He coached 1932 Olympian Arne Sundberg. Dr. Wheeler served in WW1, WW2, and Korea and retired from the Naval Reserve as a Captain. Dr. Wheeler trained and competed in swimming competitions until he was 100 years old. Sam Loprenzi called Dr. Wheeler the Father of Oregon Weightlifting. Dr. Wheeler is mentioned throughout the years Strength and Health Magazine was published 1932-1986. A lifter, administrator, and coach throughout his long life who helped establish Oregon Weightlifting.
