Robert Richard “Dick” Smith. (Contributor). 11/11/1915-4/6/2013. Dick started lifting about 1930. During WW2 he was a pilot and retired as a Major from the USAF Reserves. Dick had a financial background and managed a chain of hotels in the Washington DC area. Dick lived in Arlington Virginia.
*Dick served as the DCAAU (Potomac Valley) AAU Weightlifting Chairman from about 1960 to 1969.
*Dick was an International Referee Category 2 for weightlifting.
*Dick attended and assisted at national level weightlifting meets from about 1940 to 1980.
*Dick organized or helped organize meets in the Washington DC and Northern Virginia area for at least 20 years.
*Dick continued to assist at meets in the years after he was DCAAU Chairman as a MC, expediter, official and assisting the meet director as needed.
*Dick competed in weightlifting as a 181lb lifter and won several contests in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. WW2 interrupted his lifting career and his competitive results after the war are not available.
