David was from the Norfolk Virginia area and lifted for Colonna’s Gym. David started lifting about 1952. David entered his first competition in 1953 when he was 12 years old.

At the 1959 Teenage Nationals David pressed 220lbs for a National Teenage Record.

 

The April 1960 Strength and Health Magazine page 25 states David was State Champion in 1959. According to the official results David was 2^nd. However, if there was a Teenage Division David would have been 1^st in the Teenage Division.

 

David held the Teenage State records in the press 225lbs, snatch 210lbs and total 710lbs in the 148lb class in 1959.
