James “Jim” Bishop

 

 

Jim is from Roanoke, Virginia, and began lifting in the early 1960s. Jim lifted for the Lower Peninsula Weightlifting Club and Tar Heel Weightlifting Club. Jim graduated from Wake Forest University in 1970 and later received his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Jim was ranked 8th in the nation at 181lbs in 1967 (Strength and Health Magazine 5/1968 pg. 78 Top 10 Lifters by weight class).

 

Jim held the State teenage records in the press, snatch, and total in the 165lb class until 11/1969.

 

Jim held the State press and total records in the 165lb class until 11/1969.

 

Jim held the State press, snatch, C&J, and total records in the 181lb & 198lb classes until at least 11/1969.

 

Jim established at least 11 State records during his career.

 

Jim held all the Chesapeake Bay Invitational Weightlifting Contest records in the 181lb class in 1968.

 

*Lifting as an extra lifter at the 1969 Winston Salem Open, Jim officially cleaned 400lbs at 185lbs bodyweight but did not attempt the jerk due to injury. Jim pressed 330lbs and snatched 300lbs.
