Personal history:
I have spent my entire life living in Va and have been blessed with 2 great kids . After tearing my ACL in 1995 I was looking for something to help strengthen my body and turned to weight lifting .I bought a bench and some weights in 2000 and began my weight lifting journey. I trained in my garage for the 1st 2 years and went to a local gym to have more access to different types of equipment and heard about a powerlifting contest in Charlottesville ,VA in 2002 and decided to go watch . While at the competition I noticed how much I enjoyed the competitive atmosphere and the excitement of the lifters. I then decide to start training seriously to enter my first contest in 2003 ,the VA Open. I placed 2nd in the open division and have been competing ever since. I suffered a compression fracture on L 2 and 3 in high school ,I have torn my ACL ,I have had 6 knee surgeries to where I've had to have fluid drained from my knees before and after contest in the past. I have also studied martial arts for the past 10 years and was able to survive my back belt test. Martial arts has helped with my mental toughness and focus as well. I have competed with a torn calf muscle from martial arts training ,15 staples in my head from a injury at work , broken fifth metacarpal in my hand from belt testing .I knew I had broken it but had a contest in 2 weeks and didn't want a cast on my hand . So I competed and went to the doctor after my contest but by then it was too late to get the bone back where it should be. I've competed with torn cartilage in both knees . When asked why I do this to myself my answer is simple ; I watched my Mother struggle with the pain of cancer until she went to Heaven . So what I put my body through is nothing compared to that pain she went through. I learned over time that you have to have a different mind set for powerlifting than simply lifting in a gym for exercise . You have to be able to push your body beyond what is comfortable in order to achieve your goal of lifting as much as you can. This sport takes a lot of self- discipline and dedication with a positive mental attitude. I have trained myself most all of my career ,done things my own way .
