John met James Strosnider in 1945 and started training with James in his hometown of Strasburg Va.  James Strosnider and Dr. Howard L. James coached John teaching him the three lifts. John was still in high school at the time. John competed from about 1945/6 until about 1952. John competed for the Sacred Heart Weightlifting Club in Winchester Va.

*At the 1946 State Championships John was leading the field by 20lbs after the snatch. On John’s first attempt C&J a board on the platform broke and flipped a large piece of wood into John’s knee. Dr. James recommended John call it a day.                    

 

2^nd* State Championships 1946 123lb class. Established State records in the press and snatch.                                                                                                        

1st State Championships 1947, 123lb class. Established State records in the press, snatch, C&J and total.

1^st State Championships 1948, 123lb class. Established records in the press, snatch, C&J and total. These records stood until about 1951/52.

 

John competed in many local meets finishing first but the results were rarely published.
