James A. Strosnider Jr.

5/31/1923-1/11/2013

Born in Strasburg James started lifting in 1939 after observing the 1939 State Championships held in Winchester. James joined the Dr. Howard L. James Health Club Team and was coached by Dr. James. James primarily trained in a gym he built in his backyard in Strasburg. During the WW2 years James continued to train and compete while serving in the US Navy in California and Hawaii. James coached lifter’s in his gym until about 1960. James retired from lifting in 1952 due to a knee injury.

2nd  heavyweight 1942 State Championships.

1st   heavyweight 1947 State Championships 

1st  heavyweight  1948 State Championships

First Virginia lifter to C&J 300 lbs 10/2/1946.

Held the State heavyweight records in three lifts and total from 1946 to about 1952.

James competed in several local meets during the 1940’s where he won first place as a heavyweight but there are no official results.

James competed in meets organized by the military during WW2. The meets were in California and Hawaii. James has the medals but there is no official record.

James held all the Navy light heavy and heavyweight lifting records

while in the Navy.

James won several body building competitions while in the Navy including Mr. Camp Parks.

*According to James biography this was the 1941 State Championships as well as an open contest. The 8/1941 S&H list the contest as the Va. A.A.U. Open.
