Gerald was from Virginia Beach and taught Science and P.E. in the Virginia Beach Public School System. Gerald started lifting in high school about 1950. He competed from 1953 to 1970. During those years he became one of the best heavyweights in Virginia. Gerald lifted for Colonna’s Gym. Gerald set State records and was State Heavyweight Champion several times. Gerald was also known as a track and field champion in the shot in high school and college.

The March 1956 Strength and Health magazine contains an article about Gerald’s early lifting and track career. Hs photo also appears in the September 1954 Strength and Health.

 

It is my assumption that Gerald is also the 1961 State Champion Heavyweight but I do not have a copy of the results. In 1961 Gerald was the best Heavyweight in the State.

 

*Gerald set the State C&J record 350lbs and total record 885lbs 5/6/1961.
