Gary started general weight training in 1981. Previously Gary had been a runner often running between his home town of Front Royal Virginia and a small town 10 miles away. At the time Gary was 6’3.5” and 185 pounds. Gary enlisted in the Army in 1983 and was soon stationed in Germany. The base had a powerlifting team which Gary joined. Gary started competing in powerlifting in 1986 with his first meet in New Ulm Germany in November of 1986. Later Gary coached and managed the Augsburg Powerlifting team until he was discharged in 1989.Gary held a USPF referees card and judged many powerlifting meets. Gary competed in powerlifting from 1986-1997. Gary competed in ADFPA, NASA, USPF and WNPF competitions.

 

In 1997 Gary decided to compete in Olympic lifting. He started training at Jeff’s Gym in Stephens City Virginia. His first meet was the Virginia State Championships in June of 1998 in Richmond. Gary would compete in Olympic lifting from 1998 -2009. Since 2009 Gary has operated a large well equipped home gym where he trains athletes in strength and power sports as well as baseball, basketball and football.
